Sweden to Deploy Gripen Fighter Jets and Naval Ships to Guard Finnish Border With Russia

The Swedish government has decided to send military units to Finland to strengthen patrolling operations along the border with Russia.
According to Swedish public broadcaster SVT on August 28, the action comes after a direct request from Finnish authorities for military assistance to respond to ongoing air space threats tied to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Over the past year, Finland has recorded several instances of Ukrainian drones straying into its territory due to electronic warfare, alongside repeated air space violations by Russian military aircraft.
To handle these security concerns, the Swedish Armed Forces will soon deploy JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets and naval vessels to patrol regions along the Finnish-Russian border.
Additional ground support may also follow later in the year. Swedish air defense and counter-drone units could be sent to Finland during the autumn if the operational situation requires further force integration.
The entire deployment is organized alongside NATO and relies on bilateral agreements between the two nations. These legal frameworks give the Swedish government the mandate to deploy armed forces directly for the defense of Finnish territorial integrity.
This operation sits within a larger expansion of regional security ties in Northern Europe. Sweden is set to assume command of NATO forward land forces in Finland, where international troops will form a core element of the alliance's enhanced defense presence.
This framework includes a primary battalion task group stationed in Finland alongside a permanent multinational headquarters.
Previously, Sweden's parliamentary defense commission warned in a report covered by Bloomberg on June 12 that Russia could seek to test NATO's cohesion and commitment to mutual defense through a military attack in the "relatively near term."
The commission stated that such action could come if the Kremlin assessed that "political conditions are favorable," even when the balance of forces fell short of the traditional threshold for an attack, Bloomberg reported.
