Sweden has approved its 21st military aid package for Ukraine, valued at $1.4 billion—Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced, according to SVT on February 19.

The new assistance will primarily focus on strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, the minister said.

Around $469 million of the package will fund the procurement and transfer of the Swedish-made Tridon Mk2 air defense system, which is designed to counter aerial threats and has proven particularly effective against drones.

Sweden will also supply additional sensors, robotic systems, and anti-aircraft guns.

Another $615 million is allocated to support Ukrainian domestic production of long-range missiles and unmanned aerial systems, reinforcing Kyiv’s push to expand indigenous strike capabilities.

The remaining funds—more than $329 million—will cover grenade launchers drawn from Swedish military stockpiles, as well as the purchase of artillery ammunition, spare parts, and training for Ukrainian personnel.

The system, which Sweden is about to transfer to Ukraine, known as the Tridon Mk2, has been developed by BAE Systems to bridge the gap between missile-based air defense and counter-unmanned aircraft systems. Mounted on the back of a vehicle, it is self-propelled, remotely operated, and designed to provide rapid, flexible protection on the battlefield.

Tridon Mk2 shares core technology with the 40mm gun used on the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates, but has been adapted for land operations.

The weapon can hold 100 rounds of ammunition and has an effective range of up to 12 kilometers, depending on the target. It can also be fitted with an external radar system, enhancing situational awareness and providing early-warning protection against incoming threats.

Earlier, reports emerged that Sweden was preparing one of its largest military aid packages for Ukraine and was holding talks on the possible transfer of Meteor air-to-air missiles.

Meteor is widely regarded as the longest-range operational air-to-air missile in Europe and across NATO. Developed by MBDA, the missile is powered by a solid-fuel ramjet, allowing it to maintain high speed—above Mach 4—throughout its flight and retain lethal energy at long distances.

With an estimated range exceeding 200 kilometers, Meteor offers a much larger “no-escape zone” than conventional air-to-air missiles, enabling it to threaten highly maneuverable aircraft, cruise missiles, and UAVs even in heavy electronic warfare environments.
