A new 40mm anti-aircraft system capable of targeting everything from drones and cruise missiles to aircraft and armoured vehicles is being supplied to Ukraine.

This was reported by Forces News on September 18.

The system, known as the Tridon Mk2, has been developed by BAE Systems to bridge the gap between missile-based air defense and counter-unmanned aircraft systems. Mounted on the back of a vehicle, it is self-propelled, remotely operated, and designed to provide rapid, flexible protection on the battlefield.

According to teh Forces News, Tridon Mk2 shares core technology with the 40mm gun used on the Royal Navy’s Type 31 frigates, but has been adapted for land operations.

The weapon can hold 100 rounds of ammunition and has an effective range of up to 12 kilometers, depending on the target. It can also be fitted with an external radar system, enhancing situational awareness and providing early-warning protection against incoming threats.

The system’s transfer comes as part of a comprehensive Swedish military and civil support package for Ukraine, valued at $836 million. The package includes radar sensors, command systems, and additional programmable 40mm ammunition for Tridon Mk2, ensuring maximum effectiveness against diverse threats.

In addition to weapons systems, Sweden is contributing $68 million in financial donations to various multinational capability coalitions that are helping supply Ukraine with equipment and training.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson stressed that not all elements of the package are being disclosed. “The Russian army can expect Swedish-Ukrainian surprises going forward,” he said, underscoring Stockholm’s commitment to supporting Kyiv in both military and civil defense efforts.

Earlier, Ukrainian air defense crews employed Polish-supplied Osa-AKM-P1 Żądło systems to down Russian aircraft and drones at ranges exceeding the platform’s typical operational limits.
