Ukraine is seeking to use European Union financial support to help fund the purchase of Sweden’s Gripen fighter jet, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson said after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Mykhailo Fedorov on the sidelines of an EU defense ministers’ gathering, Swedish outlet Nyheterna reported on February 11.

“Through these 90 billion euros ($106 billion) that we have been able to secure, Ukraine will also want to use some of those funds to be able to start financing Gripen and the construction of a stronger air defense,” Jonson said.

The European Parliament had previously adopted three legislative measures paving the way for an approximately $97 billion EU loan to support Ukraine in 2026 and 2027, as the country continues to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion.

In a vote, Members of the European Parliament endorsed what they described as a “package of proposals aimed at supporting Ukraine with a €90 billion ($97 billion) EU loan for 2026 and 2027.” This loan is intended to address Kyiv’s urgent financing needs as Russia’s war of aggression enters its fifth year.

Jonson said he could not specify when a Gripen purchase might become realistic, but emphasized that talks are ongoing.

“We are working on it continuously and have a very intensive dialogue with Ukraine,” he said.

“We are also talking to other countries about them joining in and providing some funding. We are in an intensive phase,” Jonson added.

Earler, it was reported that Ukraine would launch pilot and mechanic training for Gripen E-class fighter jets in early 2026, as part of a landmark defense partnership with Sweden.

The two countries also plan to begin joint production of aircraft parts and components in Ukraine by 2033, in cooperation with Swedish manufacturer Saab.
