Gripen Jets Over Ukraine? Sweden Signals Major Post-War Security Role

Sweden is prepared to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets and contribute naval assets to clear mines from the Black Sea once a peace agreement with Russia is in place, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a public statement on January 6.
Kristersson said meaningful progress toward a potential peace framework was made during talks in Paris involving the so-called Coalition of the Willing, Ukraine, and the United States.

“When a peace agreement is reached in Ukraine, Sweden stands ready to contribute to the security guarantees for Ukraine and the rest of Europe,” the Swedish Prime Minister said.
According to Kristersson, Sweden’s potential contribution would focus on three key areas: air surveillance, maritime security, and military education.
Among the measures under consideration is the deployment of Gripen fighter jets to help monitor Ukrainian airspace, as well as Swedish naval resources to assist with clearing naval mines in the Black Sea. Stockholm also plans to continue training Ukrainian military officers.
Good progress made today in Paris, when we in the Coalition of the Willing, Ukraine and the United States met to discuss peace in Ukraine.

“We are ready to preserve the peace in Ukraine with, among other things: Gripen fighter jets for air surveillance over Ukraine; maritime resources for clearing mines in the Black Sea; continuing our training of Ukrainian military officers,” Kristersson said.
However, the Swedish leader emphasized that any such steps would be conditional. He noted that implementation would depend on the conclusion of a formal peace agreement, clearly defined rules of engagement for any multinational force, and approval by Sweden’s parliament.
“A prerequisite is, of course, for a peace deal to be reached, rules of engagement for the multinational force to be clear, and formal approval by the parliament,” he added.

Kristersson concluded by underscoring Sweden’s broader commitment to European security, saying, “Sweden is prepared to do our part for peace in Europe.”
Earlier, Sweden’s Defense Minister, Pål Jonson, assured that despite a potential deal to end the war in Ukraine, the timeline for the delivery of Saab Gripen-E fighter jets to Kyiv remains unchanged.
