“Sweden is expected to announce a new support package for Ukraine in the field of air defense in the near future. I sincerely thank Sweden for this assistance, which saves the lives of Ukrainians,” he wrote.

Shmyhal also said he discussed the progress of potential deliveries of Gripen jets with Sweden’s defense minister Pål Jonson.

According to Ukrainain Defense Minister, preparations are ongoing to launch training programs for Ukrainian pilots and technical staff.

“Informed my colleague about Russia’s massive aerial attack on Tuesday night. F-16 aircraft destroyed the vast majority of the 35 enemy cruise missiles. Noted Sweden’s significant contribution to strengthening our air capabilities,” Shmyhal added.

At the same time, Sweden’s defense minister Pål Jonson reported that even if a deal is reached to end the war in Ukraine, the schedule for delivering Saab Gripen-E fighter jets to Kyiv would not change.

Jonson said Sweden plans to provide Ukraine with between 100 and 150 Gripen-E aircraft, but noted that formal agreements and actual deliveries would take at least three years after a contract is signed. He explained that the extended timeline reflects the industrial production capacity needed to fulfill an order of that scale.

Earlier, Ukraine and Sweden agreed to expand cooperation on defense innovation, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal said after signing a letter of intent with Sweden’s Defense Minister Pål Jonson in Stockholm.
