Ukraine has started using FPV drones to intercept and destroy Russian Shahed drones, and the approach is already proving effective. Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, Vadym Sukharenskyi, shared this in an interview with LIGA.Net on February 26.
Sukharenskyi emphasized that Ukraine is constantly evolving technologically, as “every step we take is met with an asymmetric response from the enemy.”
“For example, when Shaheds from Russia began attacking us, we quickly formed thousands of mobile fire groups, which proved highly effective. The Russians saw that their attacks were failing, so they adjusted their tactics—changing flight altitudes and improving their drones. How did we respond? Now, we’re taking down Shaheds with FPV drones. And it’s already delivering real results. From here, the technological race never stops,” he noted.
“Every operation we conduct factors in diverse intelligence data—electronic warfare capabilities, enemy air defense, and the level of passive protection they use. For instance, the reinforcement of airfields, the burial of aircraft or fuel tanks. That’s why planning is everything. Without it, nothing works,” he added.

He also expressed confidence in Ukraine’s strategic victory over Russia, drawing from his own experience in 2014, a year marked by relentless encirclement and repeated brushes with death. Unlike then, he said, Ukraine is now fully prepared, with everything needed to keep fighting effectively. The key, he stressed, is focus and determination.
Previously, it was reported that Ukrainian mobile fire groups will soon be equipped with laser weapons to counter Russian Shahed drones, according to Vadym Sukharevskyi.
