Russian forces have begun using new, unidentified suicide drones in attacks on Ukraine, according to the National Police of Ukraine, which also released photos of the wreckage, on February 26.

In the past week, the city of Sumy has been hit five times by these drones, which are equipped with a powerful warhead. The strikes have targeted civilians in the streets, resulting in at least one death and three injuries. The explosions also damaged vehicles and residential buildings.

According to police, the drone has a fixed-wing design, is painted gray, and features a biplane-style wing configuration. It is powered by an electric motor with a rear-mounted pusher propeller. The warhead, weighing nearly three kilograms, is located in the nose.

Due to its small size and low-noise electric engine, the drone is difficult to detect from a distance.

Ukrainian military radio technology expert Serhii Flesh shared additional photos of the wreckage, including the drone's warhead, which bears inscriptions in Russian. The images also reveal the drone's twin vertical stabilizers at the tail.

Flesh noted that the drone's electronics are Russian-made and produced at scale, indicating mass production.

“The drone is equipped with a 22.2-volt, 34,000mAh battery, similar in capacity to the power source used in Zala drones. This allows it to carry a three-kilogram warhead over a range of 40 to 60 kilometers,” he wrote.

Following the release of the images, analysts speculated that the drone might be an Iranian Meraj-521, a UAV capable of carrying a warhead between 0.5 and 1 kilogram. The Meraj-521 closely resembles the American Switchblade 300 loitering munition.

Previously, it was reported that Russian troops have begun using their soldiers—those who refuse to follow orders—as bait for Ukrainian drone strikes.
