Ukraine Launches National Center for Innovation in Mine Action and Civil Protection

Ukraine has launched a new Training and Testing Center focused on advancing technologies in mine action, civil protection, and environmental safety, the Ministry of Defense announced on June 6.
The facility brings together Ukrainian enterprises, research institutions, and techno-industrial clusters to support innovation and practical application in critical security and safety domains. On its opening day, the site hosted demonstrations of domestically produced equipment and showcased research and development initiatives.
The center is equipped with dedicated obstacle courses for both light and heavy mechanized demining systems, as well as testing zones for unmanned robotic platforms, metal detectors, and specialized demining equipment.

According to the Ministry, the site will serve as a key hub for consolidating expertise, conducting scientific research, and enabling the development of cutting-edge technologies in mine action and environmental protection.
“This complex is a unique platform for practical use, interagency and international cooperation, and the testing of both domestic and foreign systems in the areas of mine action, civil protection, and environmental safety,” said Ruslan Berehula, Head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action.
Earlier it was reported that full demining of Ukraine is expected to take decades following the end of the war, according to Paul Heslop, head of the UNDP Mine Action Program in Ukraine.
Heslop outlined a three-phase process for mine clearance, explaining that eliminating the most immediate threats could take approximately five years. Addressing the majority of contaminated areas is likely to require ten to fifteen years.
