Ukraine Makes Eurovision History with Record-Breaking Finals Appearance
Ukrainian music duo Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil triumphed at the first Eurovision semi-finals in Malmö, Sweden, on May 5th with their song “Teresa & Maria.” Their qualification secures Ukraine’s record-breaking 17th appearance in the finals — a feat unmatched in Eurovision history.
They will perform in the grand final on May 11th alongside representatives from 15 other countries: Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia, Lithuania, Finland, Cyprus, Croatia, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
A collaboration between Alyona Alyona (Alona Savranenko) and Jerry Heil (Yana Shemayeva), “Teresa & Maria” evokes the ideals of strong women through references to Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary. Its lyrics celebrate love, kindness, and wisdom.
Grammy-nominated Ukrainian director Tanya Muino staged the performance. The song’s symbolism highlights the immense pressure many Ukrainian women have faced since Russia’s full-scale invasion, forcing them to flee as refugees or become sole caregivers for their families.
