Ukraine Reacts to US Action in Venezuela, Calls for Democracy and Rule of Law

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that developments in Venezuela—specifically the detention of Nicolás Maduro by US forces—must proceed in accordance with international law.
Kyiv reiterated its longstanding position that Maduro’s regime violated democratic principles and fundamental human rights.
Ukraine has consistently defended the right of nations to live freely, free of dictatorship, oppression, and human rights violations. The Maduro regime has violated all such principles in every respect.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha issued a statement on January 3, 2026, via social media platform X, stressing that “Ukraine consistently defends the right of peoples to live freely, without dictatorship, oppression, or violations of human rights.” He added, “The Maduro regime has violated all these principles in every respect.”
According to Sybiha, Ukraine continues to support the Venezuelan people’s right to security, prosperity, dignity, and democratic freedoms. “We support further developments in line with international law and the priorities of democracy, human rights, and the interests of Venezuelans,” he stated.
“We thank everyone around the world who helps protect life,” Sybiha said in his concluding remarks. He further reminded that Ukraine, along with dozens of countries across various regions, refused to recognize Maduro’s legitimacy following contested elections and a violent crackdown on opposition protesters.
Earlier, on January 3, US forces launched a military operation in Venezuela that led to the detention of Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Explosions were reported near the port of La Guaira, indicating armed activity in the vicinity of the capital, Caracas.
