Ukraine Releases Audio of Russian Commander Allegedly Planning Chemical Attack

On July 24, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) released intercepted radio communications capturing Russian military personnel discussing plans to use chemical agents against Ukrainian positions.

According to HUR, the communication involves a Russian commander describing preparations to deploy gas against Ukrainian troops sheltering in a basement. In the audio, the commander is reportedly heard saying:

“Now I’m going to gas them in the basement.”

The recording further reveals the commander instructing subordinates to eliminate any survivors following the chemical attack, stating:

“If that doesn’t finish them off—while they’re coughing and disoriented—they’ll need to be quickly dealt with afterward.”

This is not the first time Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces of employing banned munitions. Previous claims have included the alleged use of tear gas, chemical chloroacetophenone and chloropicrin in active combat zones.

The use of chemical weapons is strictly prohibited under international law, including the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, to which Russia is a signatory.

Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that Russia is ramping up its use of chemical weapons in Ukraine—this is confirmed by intelligence from several countries.
