Ukraine Shares Battlefield Lessons in NATO’s Red Hyena 45 Wargame in UK

Representatives of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre (JATEC) have participated in the Red Hyena 45 strategic war game in the United Kingdom, contributing Ukrainian battlefield experience to inform elements of NATO’s long-term policy toward Russia, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry on December 8. 

The ministry stated that the exercise was conducted at the UK Defense Ministry’s Defense Experimentation and Wargaming Hub and formed part of a series of military-strategic games organized by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation.

The games are intended to implement a policy of military strategic deterrence endorsed at alliance summits in 2024 and 2025, which defined Russia as a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security.

JATEC, a NATO-Ukraine joint center opened in Poland in February 2025, is staffed by Ukrainian and NATO personnel and is tasked with identifying, analyzing and incorporating lessons from Russia’s war against Ukraine into NATO strategy, policy and operations. 

According to the Ukrainian side and NATO Allied Command Transformation, the game design made extensive use of artificial intelligence tools to generate scenarios, test the validity of decisions and forecast their consequences.

Earlier, it was reported that the Washington Summit declaration advanced the creation of the NATO–Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Centre as a central cooperation pillar to extract lessons from Russia’s war against Ukraine and boost Ukraine’s interoperability with NATO.
