On August 27, Ukraine’s state nuclear energy agency Energoatom announced plans to restart construction of the Chyhyryn Nuclear Power Plant in the Cherkasy region, which had been previously abandoned.

"Energoatom's team is actively working on finding new sites for construction. The most promising of them is Chyhyryn, near the town of Orbita in the Cherkasy region. There are plans to build four new power units using AP1000 technology," Energoatom wrote.

The press service of the energy company reported the first steps in this direction have already been taken. Thus, during the meeting of the extraordinary 51st session, the deputies of the Chyhyryn City Council made a decision regarding:

  • granting permission for the development of a land management project regarding the allocation of land plots for permanent use by Energoatom;

  • transfer of land plots with a total area of 38,1493 hectares to the permanent use of Energoatom JSC.

"Energoatom intends to revive Orbita, making it one of the most modern towns like Netishyn, Yuzhnoukrainsk, or Varash. The successful implementation of these plans is certainly a significant investment in the post-war recovery and support of the country's energy security," emphasized Petro Kotin, Head of Energoatom.

Energoatom's press service previously announced that the construction of reactor units 5 and 6 at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant has commenced. This development aims to mitigate the risk of power outages in the event of Russian attacks.
