Ukraine Wins Third Gold and Fifth Swimming Medal at Paris 2024 Paralympics
On September 1, Ukraine achieved its third gold medal of the 2024 Paralympics when Mykhailo Serbin won the 100-meter backstroke and secured its fifth swimming medal of the Games, with Anna Hontar earning bronze in the 100 meters breaststroke (class SB5).
Hontar had previously won her first Paralympic medal at these Games, taking bronze in the 50 meters freestyle. She had the opportunity to add another medal in the 100 meters breaststroke.
Hontar made it to the final based on her qualifying performance, where she finished third overall. Only British swimmer Grace Harvey and Chinese swimmer Li Zhang were ahead of her.
In the final, Hontar clinched the bronze medal with a time of 1:44.25 minutes.
Ukraine achieved its third gold medal of the 2024 Paralympics when Mykhailo Serbin won the 100-meter backstroke.
Serbin, a 20-year-old from Kharkiv region, competed in the S11 class for blind swimmers.
Ukrainian swimmer Danylo Chufarov took home the bronze medal, while Czech swimmer David Kratochvil won the silver.
Earlier on September 1, Oksana Zubkovska of Ukraine won a gold medal in the T12 long jump event.
Additionally, Ukraine achieved a historic first in boccia on September 1. Artem Kolinko won a bronze medal in the B4 class event, marking the country's first medal in this sport, which is designed for people with cerebral palsy.
In 2024, Ukraine sent its largest-ever team to the Paralympics, with 140 athletes competing in 17 of the 22 sports, representing the most sports Ukraine has ever participated in at the Games.
