Ukraine’s Envoy to South Africa Refuses to Sign Khamenei Condolence Book, Citing Iranian Drones Killing Ukrainians

The Iranian Embassy in South Africa sent a formal notice to the Ukrainian Embassy regarding the opening of a book of condolences for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates.
Oleksandr Scherba, the Ukrainian Ambassador to South Africa, shared his official response to the request publicly on March 4.

In his letter, the Ukrainian diplomat pointed out that Iran’s leadership serves as a military ally to Russia. He noted that its leaders are responsible for providing the military technology and Shahed drones used to kill Ukrainians during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Scherba stated that the Iranian leadership participated in the ongoing suffering of Ukrainian civilians. He explained that his refusal to participate in the mourning process is rooted in the reality of the daily attacks launched against Ukraine using Iranian-made weaponry.
The ambassador emphasized that he would not express grief for individuals whose actions have caused such significant harm to his country. He concluded by saying that those who have committed such acts must face the consequences of their decisions.

“Your leaders were accomplices in the endless grief suffered by Ukrainian civilians. As a believer, I try not to rejoice in the death of other people—even those who consciously chose to be the tormentors of my people, who did nothing wrong to yours,” Scherba said.
“But as a person who lived in Kyiv for three years under the daily howling of Iranian death machines, I cannot help but wish that every criminal gets what they deserve for what they have done. If not before people, then before God,” he added.
Earlier, it was reported that Israeli intelligence and the CIA conducted a joint operation on February 28, 2026, which resulted in a precision strike on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound in Tehran.
This mission followed a significant cyber breach where Israeli operatives hacked Tehran’s traffic camera network to monitor the supreme leader’s movements and security routines in real time.
According to reports, the success of the strike relied on a combination of electronic warfare, mobile phone interceptions, and human intelligence to ensure the target was pinpointed with absolute certainty.
