Ukraine's Second Ada-Class Corvette Launches in Istanbul
On July 1, a launching ceremony of the second corvette-class ship, the “Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky” was held at the Istanbul Shipyard Naval. The ship, constructed by Turkish shipbuilding company STM, is the second of its kind ordered by the Ukrainian Navy.
First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, served as the ship’s godmother, following in the footsteps of her role in the launch of the first corvette, the “Hetman Ivan Mazepa.” In a traditional maritime ceremony, she broke a champagne bottle against the hull, officially christening the vessel.
“Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky,” Zelenska declared, “may you have a long and successful life. Stand firm and reliable in defense of those who trust you with their lives. May you embody the best of both Turkey and Ukraine in your mission to protect justice and peace.”
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Forces, Vice Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, were among the dignitaries in attendance. In his address, Neizhpapa expressed gratitude to Turkey for its support in strengthening Ukraine’s naval forces.
Highlighting the broader geopolitical context, Neizhpapa emphasized Ukraine’s fight for security not only within its own borders but also for the entire region, including the Black Sea. He underscored the importance of free navigation, intact borders, and peaceful coexistence.
The launch of the “Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky” follows a meeting between Ukrainian and Turkish naval leadership the previous day, where discussions focused on Black Sea security, cooperation, and experience sharing.
Ukraine continues to advance its naval capabilities with the support of international partners as the country defends itself against Russian aggression.
