The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO) have recently integrated the advanced American Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B) system into their operations, significantly boosting the effectiveness of their night missions, according to Defense Express.

Developed by the American company L3Harris, the ENVG-B combines night vision and thermal imaging technologies, offering soldiers superior situational awareness in complete darkness.

The system’s capabilities are designed to enhance accuracy while reducing exposure to enemy fire. This is achieved by linking the ENVG-B with the Family of Weapon Sight-Individual (FWS-I), allowing soldiers to view the weapon sight reticle directly through the goggles. As a result, soldiers can engage targets without the need to shoulder their weapons, minimizing the risk of being targeted by adversaries.

The ENVG-B system incorporates several advanced features, including:

  • White Phosphor Technology: Replacing traditional green phosphor, this feature improves contrast and clarity, providing better resolution for distinguishing objects in low-light conditions.

  • Dual-Tube Binocular Design: This design enhances depth perception and situational awareness, critical for operations in complex environments.

  • Fused Thermal Imager: The system’s thermal capabilities allow for superior target recognition even in obscured conditions, such as smoke, dust, or complete darkness.

  • Lightweight Build: Weighing between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds, the system is designed for prolonged use without burdening the operator.

  • Extended Battery Life: The system offers a minimum of 7.5 hours of operational use, with the objective of 15 hours, ensuring reliability during extended missions.

The ENVG-B goggles have already demonstrated their value in the field. Ukrainian soldiers, including members of the 8th SSO Brigade, showcased the technology in an Instagram post, revealing the enhanced capabilities of the system in nighttime operations.

The goggles feature an augmented reality system that allows soldiers to remotely engage targets by projecting the weapon sight directly into the display. This system also provides situational data, such as waypoints and combat space visuals, without requiring soldiers to remove the goggles.

The integration of ENVG-B into Ukrainian forces’ operations represents a significant leap forward in military technology. By offering clearer vision in the darkest environments, enhancing targeting precision, and increasing battlefield safety, the system is set to improve the operational capacity of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces in their ongoing defense efforts.
