UN Documents Sexual Abuse and Torture of Ukrainians by Russian Soldiers

The United Nations has documented numerous cases of sexual violence against Ukrainians committed by Russian soldiers, according to the annual report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the UN Security Council on conflict-related sexual violence, according to a report seen by Reuters on August 12.
The report, citing “credible information,” notes widespread violations “by the Russian armed forces, security services, and associated armed groups,” primarily targeting Ukrainian prisoners of war held in 50 official and 22 unofficial detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia.
“These cases included a significant number of documented instances of violence against the genitals, including electric shocks, beatings, and burns, as well as forced nudity and prolonged nakedness, used to humiliate and extract confessions or information,” Guterres wrote.

He stated he was “gravely concerned” by the reports of violence by Russian soldiers against Ukrainians and emphasized that he had called out Russia for such actions. Guterres warned that next year Russia could be placed on the list of parties “redibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape or other forms of sexual violence.”
Earlier, UN experts raised alarm over “credible and well-documented allegations of long-standing trafficking and forced labor exploitation of migrant women in the Golyanovo district of Moscow, Russia.”
According to the statement, the victims—mostly from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan—have endured decades of severe exploitation and violence.
