Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence in the United States, has publicly revealed the name of a senior CIA officer who worked undercover in Russia, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources familiar with the matter.

The officer’s name was included in a list of 37 current and former officials whose security clearances Gabbard revoked. She published the list on the social media platform X on August 19.

Most individuals on the list either participated in intelligence assessments related to Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 US presidential election or signed a 2019 letter calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

“An intelligent [Director of National Intelligence] would have consulted with the CIA before identifying an undercover officer. This could potentially jeopardize CIA cover procedures. It could also threaten relationships with foreign governments,” told WSJ former CIA Chief of Staff Larry Pfeiffer.

Gabbard stated that she acted on Trump’s instructions, arguing that the officials “breached trust and politicized, manipulated, or facilitated the leaking of classified information.”

According to a WSJ source, Gabbard was not aware that the officer had served undercover. Three other sources said that her office did not consult with the CIA before releasing the list.

This is not the first time Gabbard has made sensitive intelligence information public. In July, she released a document detailing Russian influence on the 2016 US election, which included information about confidential sources and agency methods.

Previously, it was reported that Gabbard falsely claimed that Ukraine is restricting democratic freedoms, citing the closure of churches, the cancellation of elections, and government control over the media.
