US Rushes Massive Weapon Deliveries to Ukraine Ahead of Mid-January, CNN Reports
The Biden administration is expediting the delivery of previously announced military aid to Ukraine, aiming to provide critical resources before President Biden’s term concludes, according to CNN.
A senior administration official confirmed that the Department of Defense is engaged in a significant operation to transfer large quantities of weapons to Ukraine before mid-January.
“From now until mid-January, we will deliver hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, thousands of missiles, hundreds of armored vehicles, and other essential equipment to Ukraine,” the official stated.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is leading the interagency effort to meet this timeline. In November, on President Biden’s instructions, Sullivan directed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to expedite the delivery of armored vehicles, missiles, artillery, and other military assets. The Pentagon is currently relying on both air and sea transport to meet the delivery goals.
According to CNN, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan updated Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, on the status of these shipments last week, as reported by a source familiar with the discussions. David Shimer, the National Security Council Director for Ukraine, has been coordinating efforts with the Pentagon to ensure smooth logistics.
On December 12, the US announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $500 million including HIMARS.
