The US administration is considering the imposition of sanctions on Algeria in response to the country’s acquisition of Russian fighter jets.
The announcerment was made by Robert Palladino, the head of the US State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs on February 3 during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, according to Russia state-run news agency TASS.

“We are aware of media reports regarding this matter, and we find them concerning,” Palladino stated in response to a lawmaker’s inquiry about potential US sanctions against Algeria. We will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Palladino remarked, further noting that he would discuss the issue with senators in a closed session.
Palladino also addressed the US efforts to deter Algeria from procuring Russian military equipment.
“We work closely with the Algerian government on matters where we share mutual agreements. However, we strongly disagree on several issues, and this is one example of a matter the US considers problematic.” He further explained, “We are leveraging diplomatic channels, often privately, to safeguard our interests and prevent unacceptable actions.”

According to TASS, in February 2025, Algeria confirmed its purchase of Su-57E fifth-generation fighter jets from Russia, becoming the first international customer for this advanced Russian aircraft model. The acquisition was announced by the state television network of Algeria. In addition to the Su-57E, the Algerian Air Force operates several other Russian-made fighter jets.
At the same time, India is prioritizing the development of its domestic stealth fighter, the AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft), over potential cooperation with Russia regarding the Su-57, despite Moscow’s continued offers of technology transfer and local production.
Defense Express reported that Russia had proposed a package deal involving the Su-57E fighter jet for India. This deal includes technology transfer and the potential for domestic assembly through Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, a state-owned aerospace manufacturer in India.

A full-scale model of the AMCA is set to be showcased at Aero India 2025 in Bengaluru, signaling India’s commitment to its long-term goal of developing an advanced stealth aircraft tailored to its needs.
Russia has also suggested that technologies from the Su-57 could support India’s AMCA program. However, the Indian Defense Research Wing has raised concerns about the feasibility and necessity of such cooperation, questioning whether the integration of Su-57 technologies would significantly benefit India’s own development efforts, according to Defense Express.
Earlier, OSINT researchers from Frontelligence Insight uncovered how Russia continues to evade Western sanctions in the production of its Su-57 fighter jets, which are touted as competitors to the American F-22 and F-35. The investigation revealed procurement strategies for high-tech equipment essential to manufacturing critical components of these fifth-generation aircraft.
