US officials confirmed that President Biden has given the green light for the deployment of an additional Patriot missile battery to Ukraine. This decision comes amidst Ukraine's ongoing efforts to defend itself against Russian assaults targeting its civilian and energy infrastructure.
Ukraine has been calling on the transfer of additional Patriot systems for months in order to protect its cities. Just yesterday, during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine needs at least seven additional Patriot systems.
This would be the second patriot battery provided to Ukraine by the US. The decision has not been publicly announced and was told to The New York Times by two US officials on condition of anonymity.
“If we had these modern Patriot systems, (Russian) airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly close enough to drop the bombs on the civilian population and the military,” Zelenskyy said during his latest visit to Spain.
