Xi Speaks With Trump and Putin, Signals Continued China–Russia Alignment

Chinese President Xi Jinping held separate discussions with US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump, in his conversation with Xi, reaffirmed the “exceptionally good” relations between the US and China, emphasizing that they had discussed a range of critical issues, DW reported, citing Chinese media on February 4.
Among the discussed topics were trade, the situation in Taiwan, Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, and Iran. Trump also revealed his plans to visit China in the near future.

The talks between Xi and Putin centered around the deepening strategic cooperation between Russia and China, which both leaders have characterized as being at an “unprecedented level,” DW wrote.
Putin accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China within the first half of the year, with additional plans for meetings later in the year, including at the APEC summit in November.
During their conversation, both Xi and Putin expressed aligned views on the United States and its international initiatives. They discussed Trump’s proposal for a “Peace Council,” although neither Russia nor China has officially accepted the offer, neither have they outright rejected it, according to DW.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was another key topic. Putin and Xi discussed the situation, with the Chinese leader expressing support for the trilateral security talks currently being held in Abu Dhabi, which involve the US, Russia, and China.
Despite China claiming neutrality in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, earlier reports suggested that Russia had tripled its monthly production of 9M723 ballistic missiles used in its Iskander-M systems, largely because of the exports from China.
Additionally, the two leaders discussed global security challenges, including the situations in Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. Both leaders agreed to continue their strong cooperation with these nations.
Previously, it was reported that China had provided Russia with advanced machinery, tools, and components critical to the production of nuclear-capable hypersonic missiles, including the Oreshnik system.
