Zelenskyy: Kupiansk Visit Proved Russia Is Lying—and Washington Took Notice

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his recent visit to Kupiansk had a direct and significant impact on discussions with Western partners, reinforcing evidence that the Russian leader is misrepresenting the situation on the ground and strengthening Ukraine’s position in talks with both Washington and European capitals, Zelenskyy stated, answering journalists’ questions on December 18.
The Ukrainian President was asked whether Ukraine’s partners had seen his address from Kupiansk and whether it helped demonstrate that Moscow was lying about the city’s status.

“It had a significant impact on both Americans and Europeans,” Zelenskyy said.
“Everyone appreciated it highly: our soldiers holding Kupiansk, and the fact that I was there in person—it put an end to Putin’s lies about occupying new territories.”
Zelenskyy said the visit directly shaped his subsequent conversations with Western leaders.
“It influenced my conversations with Americans. It had a very strong impact on my conversations with Europeans,” he said. “I think it is also very important that I wanted to personally award our soldiers on such a day.”
Kupiansk, a key rail hub in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, has been the subject of repeated and conflicting claims from Moscow in recent weeks. Russian officials have asserted that the city was taken or fully encircled—claims Ukraine has consistently denied.
Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a successful counteroffensive near Kupiansk, encircling a Russian force inside the city.
