Zelenskyy Makes His First Official Visit to Iceland
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Iceland on October 28 for his first official working visit to the country. Zelenskyy announced via his X (Twitter) account that he will participate in the Fourth Ukraine-Nordic Summit and engage in bilateral discussions with the Prime Ministers of Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, he is scheduled to meet with Iceland’s President and members of its Parliament.
During the summit, Zelenskyy emphasized key topics for discussion, including support for Ukraine’s “Victory Plan,” financing for domestic weapons production, and the provision of long-range capabilities. He also highlighted issues surrounding winter preparedness, maritime security, the restriction of Russia’s shadow fleet, and enhancing defense assistance to Ukrainian forces.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the Nordic countries for their support, acknowledging their role as principled allies. He stated that the Ukraine-Nordic Platform is among the most productive multilateral formats for cooperation.
The Nordic Council meeting, taking place from October 28 to 31 in Reykjavik, will see nearly 90 participants, including Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and members of Parliament from the region. Zelenskyy is expected to deliver a speech before the council on October 29, focusing on peace and security in the Arctic and potentially updating the Helsinki Agreement.
Additionally, Ukraine has invited the Nordic nations to join the “Northern Brigade” initiative, which aims for each Nordic country to prepare and equip a Ukrainian battalion as part of its defense strategy.
