Zelenskyy Set To Visit Germany and Address Bundestag for the First Time In-Person

Authors

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is expected to arrive in Berlin next Tuesday, June 11th, to potentially address Germany’s parliament. This would be his first in-person address to the Bundestag, following a virtual speech on March 17th, 2022.

The visit coincides with a conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction scheduled for June 11th and 12th, co-organized by the German Foreign Office. The meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remains unconfirmed.

An address would require a special session of the Bundestag. Robin Wagener, head of the German-Ukrainian parliamentary group, believes a speech would be “an important sign of solidarity and friendship with Ukraine, and a recognition of the country’s achievements.”

Zelensky’s visit follows a recent major shift in Berlin’s position, announcing that it no longer opposes Ukraine’s use of German and other Western-supplied weapons to target Russian territory.

Additionally noting, that this move will not lead to further escalation.
