From a Bombed Out McDonalds in Kyiv to the Kharkiv Frontlines: This Week in Ukraine, in Photos

Week after week, Ukrainians keep fighting against Russia’s full-scale onslaught. Even in the capital of the country, a weekend morning near a metro station can hold the looming uncertainty of becoming a target for a Russian ballistic missile. This is the week (20-26th of January 2025) in photos through the lens of some of the most prominent Ukrainian photographers.

JAN 21, 2025 — "In the Auschwitz-Birkenau (Oświęcim) concentration camp, there is a so-called “black wall” where the Nazis executed prisoners by shooting. I was there in 2018 and still remember the bullet marks. On January 18, after a Russian missile strike, hundreds of shrapnel marks appeared on the marble wall of a restaurant near the Lukyanivska metro station. Three people were killed next to it. I once thought that such walls were a thing of the past, but now, for the past 11 years, these “walls” are everywhere. This wall now also speaks of pain and loss, just like the one I once saw".
