BAE Systems Partners With Ukrainian Industry to Manufacture L119 Light Artillery Systems

British defense contractor BAE Systems signed a strategic licensing agreement with a Ukrainian partner to enable the local production and testing of L119 Light Gun artillery systems in Ukraine, BAE Systems reported on July 22.
Under the terms finalized at the Farnborough International Airshow, the licensing deal grants Ukrainian defense manufacturers direct access to BAE Systems' technical specifications and engineering support.

The initial phase of the agreement focuses on manufacturing a test model, laying the foundation to develop a specialized variant of the 105mm L119 Light Gun tailored to the operational demands of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The towed artillery piece is widely utilized by Ukrainian forces due to its mobility, rapid deployment capability, and battlefield reliability.
Highlighting the long-term focus of the initiative, BAE Systems emphasized that localized production builds essential industrial resilience within Ukraine’s sovereign defense sector.
“Strong defence capability depends on trusted industrial strategic partnerships. This agreement brings together BAE Systems’ artillery expertise and our strategic defence partner’s knowledge of Ukraine’s operational requirements to support the development of sovereign capability where it’s needed most,” stated Giles Ambrose, Director of Engineering, Technology and Strategy at BAE Systems Weapon Systems UK.
“Supporting Ukraine is not simply about supplying equipment. It is also about working together to build the industrial resilience, skills and capacity needed to sustain defence capability for the long term,” he added, according to BAE Systems.
The agreement aligns with wider efforts by Western allies to transition from direct weapons transfers to localized manufacturing partnerships within Ukraine. The deal also follows significant domestic investments by BAE Systems in artillery infrastructure, including reviving British production facilities to supply 105mm and 155mm gun barrels directly to frontline units, BAE Systems reported.
The licensing deal comes as BAE Systems works to scale up ammunition manufacturing, despite previous delays at its new 155mm shell plant in Wales aimed at doubling production capacity for frontline supplies.
