How Crowdfunded Ukrainian Drone Guides Strike on Senior Russian Officers in Luhansk Region

Ukrainian forces have destroyed a Russian forward command post in the Luhansk region following aerial reconnaissance by a crowdfunded reconnaissance drone, according to Ukrainian volunteer and charity founder Serhiy Prytula on July 30.

Operators utilizing a Ukrainian-made Shark UAV—procured through the “Jaws” public fundraising initiative—located and illuminated the military installation before Ukrainian forces launched a heavy air strike on the target. The attack resulted in 18 Russian combat fatalities and several dozen additional casualties, Prytula stated.

Among those killed in the strike were high-ranking Russian officers, including the commander and deputy commander of the 201st Separate Rifle Regiment, as well as the head of the armored service of the 7th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade.

The OSINT community has identified the location of the strike as the outskirts of the city of Lysychansk, approximately 40 kilometers from the front line.

This may indicate the use of guided bombs such as the JDAM-ER or AASM HAMMER, Militarnyi notes. It is not reported which aircraft carried out the bombing.

The chief of staff of the 201st Separate Rifle Regiment was also wounded in the attack alongside dozens of other personnel, according to Prytula.

Highlighting the role of civilian donations in frontline military outcomes, Prytula commended contributors for enabling the reconnaissance unit to identify the target.

“Your donations helped reduce an entire enemy command post in Luhansk Oblast to dust. Just know this,” Prytula noted.

In temporarily occupied Crimea and other Russian-controlled territories, Ukrainian drones have recently struck 10 additional power substations, bringing the total number of energy targets hit during a month-long campaign by the Unmanned Systems Forces to 164.
