Putin Turns 74—and Ukraine’s General Staff Has a 1,690-Troop “Birthday” Tally for Him

Russia lost an estimated 1,690 troops, 51 artillery systems, and two air defense systems over the past 24 hours, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on October 7, framing the latest battlefield tally around Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s 74th birthday.
“The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is summing up the interim results of the Russian army’s losses for Vladimir Putin’s 74th birthday,” the military said.

According to Ukraine’s latest estimates, Russia has lost approximately 1,545,950 personnel since the start of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
Russian forces also lost four armored combat vehicles over the latest reporting period, bringing the cumulative total to 25,498. No additional tanks were recorded as lost, leaving that figure at 12,396.
Another 51 artillery systems were added to the tally, raising Russia’s estimated cumulative losses to 50,836. Ukraine also reported eight multiple-launch rocket systems and two air defense systems lost, bringing those totals to 2,192 and 1,690, respectively.

Operational-tactical UAV losses increased by 1,890 to an estimated 551,876, while another 12 unmanned ground systems brought that category to 2,878.
Russia’s estimated aviation losses remained unchanged at 443 aircraft and 356 helicopters. Cruise missile losses stayed at 5,126, while naval losses remained at 35 ships and boats and two submarines.
Another 577 vehicles and fuel tankers were recorded as lost, bringing the cumulative total to 159,128. Ukraine also reported five additional pieces of special equipment, raising that figure to 4,800.
“By unleashing the largest war on the continent since World War II, the Russian dictator, with every passing year, brings his country closer to the abyss and himself closer to the dustbin of history,” Ukraine’s General Staff said.
Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed 202 times across the front during the latest reporting period.
Previously, Ukrainian forces recorded more than 11,000 confirmed strikes against Russian targets located over 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the front line in September, while also hitting a record number of Russian air defense systems.
September marked the first time the number of confirmed strikes beyond 20 kilometers exceeded 11,000 in a single month. Ukrainian forces also recorded their highest number of strikes against targets located more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the front.
