Russian airborne forces deployed the Kurier unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from an Il-76 military transport aircraft for the first time during the Center-2026 strategic command-and-staff exercises, Militarnyi reported on October 5, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

According to Militarnyi, the robotic system was dropped from an altitude of approximately 600 meters using a P-7 parachute platform. Operators had deployed to the exercise area in advance and assumed control of the vehicles after they landed.

Under the exercise scenario, the UGVs were tasked with operating behind the lines of a simulated enemy. Their missions included providing fire support to assault units, transporting ammunition and other supplies, evacuating wounded personnel, and damaging road infrastructure.

The Kurier UGV is a Russian multipurpose remotely operated ground robot built on a tracked chassis. Its design allows it to be fitted with various equipment and weapons depending on the mission, Militarnyi reported.

According to open-source data, the basic version measures approximately 1.4 × 1.2 × 0.58 meters, weighs up to 250 kilograms, and can reach speeds of up to 35 km/h. Its control range is between 3 and 10 kilometers, while its operational endurance is up to 72 hours.

The Kurier is used to transport ammunition, food, and other supplies, evacuate wounded personnel, conduct reconnaissance, and lay mines. For combat missions, it can be equipped with various weapons, including a 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun, 12.7 mm NSVT or Kord machine guns, and AGS-17 and AGS-30 automatic grenade launchers, according top the outlet.

The deployment of the Kurier formed part of the broader Center-2026 exercises, during which Russian forces also rehearsed offensive operations involving the territory of a neighboring Central Asian state. The drills involved more than 47,000 personnel across several training grounds and the Caspian Sea.

Interfax reported on October 2 that the exercise scenario initially involved Russian forces repelling an attack in the South Ural direction before transitioning to an offensive aimed at retaking captured territory and establishing a “security zone” inside a neighboring state.
