A Russian man convicted of murdering and dismembering his eight-month-old daughter was released from prison to join Russia’s war against Ukraine. He was later killed in combat, Russian outlet 161.RU reported on October 9.

According to 161.RU, police investigating the disappearance of the couple’s daughter in 2023 found the child’s remains in a freezer at their apartment. The body had been dismembered, and part of it had been put through a meat grinder.

Russia has repeatedly recruited convicted violent offenders for its war against Ukraine, offering some a path out of lengthy prison sentences through military service. Among those released were prisoners convicted of murder and other serious crimes, including Nikolai Ogolobyak, who was serving a 20-year sentence before joining the war and later receiving a pardon, UNITED24 Media reported.

Investigators maintained that both parents killed the child together. Maiboroda denied responsibility during the proceedings, although a 161.RU source in law enforcement said the couple initially admitted involvement before later changing their testimony and blaming each other.

His conviction was upheld by an appeals court in January 2025.

A lawyer familiar with the case told 161.RU that Maiboroda signed a contract with Russia’s Defense Ministry after losing his appeal and was allowed to leave prison for military service.

“Maiboroda signed a contract with the Defense Ministry when he lost the appeal, and the military enlistment office gave the go-ahead,” the lawyer stated.

Maiboroda was killed in the combat zone in April 2025, only months after leaving prison, according to the outlet. The precise circumstances of his death have not been officially disclosed.

A source cited by 161.RU stated that one version from fellow servicemen suggested Maiboroda may have been killed during an assault in the Kostiantynivka direction in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.

Despite his conviction, Maiboroda’s name was later engraved on a granite memorial in Chertkovo dedicated to Russian troops killed during the war, according to 161.RU.

The outlet reported that the memorial was unveiled in September and lists Maiboroda among those commemorated as participants in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

His wife remains imprisoned. According to the lawyer cited by 161.RU, she had also sought permission to join the war as a medical worker but was required to continue serving her sentence.

In May, Russian authorities were searching for convicted serial killer Andrey Kiyko after he reportedly escaped from a military hospital. Kiyko had signed a Russian Defense Ministry contract while serving a 25-year prison sentence for multiple murders and sexual assaults.
