Russian “Disposable Agents” Caught With Explosive Device on Way to German Defense Target

Two people were detained at the Serbian-Hungarian border on suspicion of preparing a sabotage attack in Germany on behalf of Russian intelligence services, German outlet BILD reported on July 7, citing its own sources.
According to the report, the suspects were so-called “disposable agents”—people used by Russian handlers to carry out one-off tasks for small payments.

During a search, authorities reportedly found an explosive device in the suspects’ possession.
The suspected target was a defense facility in Germany linked to military aid for Ukraine. The exact name of the site has not been disclosed.
The arrests took place in early June at the border, based on intelligence provided by German services and other friendly agencies, according to BILD.
The case is being described as one of the first results of Germany’s new Center for Countering Hybrid Threats, which opened in Berlin in June.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed during the presentation of a counterintelligence report that an explosive attack had been prevented. He said German law enforcement agencies had acted in time against individuals preparing an attack on German territory.
Previously, Dutch law enforcement dismantled critical web infrastructure utilized by Russian hackers, dealing a significant blow to a group responsible for launching disruptive cyberattacks across Europe.
