Russian Troops Execute Captured Ukrainian Soldier Near Myrne in Donetsk Region

Russian forces executed a Ukrainian prisoner of war following an attack on Ukrainian Defense Forces positions near Myrne, in the Volnovakha district of Donetsk Oblast, on July 22.
According to Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, citing the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor's Office, the serviceman was captured while carrying out a combat mission before being shot dead.

The incident highlights a broader pattern in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, where captivity no longer serves as a guarantee of safety for captured personnel.
Ukrainian authorities state that captive soldiers are regularly subjected to interrogations, torture, and extrajudicial killings. These actions violate international humanitarian law, including the rules set out in the Geneva Conventions, as war crimes continue to be integrated into combat methods.
In response to the execution, Ukrainian officials have dispatched formal letters to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations (UN).
The outreach aims to ensure that such acts are officially documented and that those responsible are held fully accountable under international standards.
"If you became a witness or possess any information about violations of the rights of citizens of Ukraine or executions of Ukrainian military personnel, please immediately report this to the 'hotline' of the Ombudsman of Ukraine at 1678 and to law enforcement agencies," said Dmytro Lubinets.
Officials emphasize that every piece of information plays a critical role in investigating war crimes and ensuring that perpetrators face justice.
On April 12, 2026, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported that Russian forces had executed four captured Ukrainian servicemen near the settlement of Veterynarne in the Kharkiv region. The incident occurred on April 11 after Russian troops stormed positions held by a mechanized brigade of the 14th Army Corps.
Investigators established that the four soldiers were taken prisoner and subsequently shot with automatic weapons while they were unarmed. The Prosecutor General’s Office opened a pre-trial investigation into the event, classifying it as a grave violation of the Geneva Convention and a war crime.
