Russian Troops Push Toward Sloviansk—Ukraine’s Counterattacks Stop Them Cold

Russian forces continued offensive operations toward Sloviansk on August 1 and 2 but failed to secure any confirmed advances after Ukrainian troops launched successful counterattacks, according to an Institute for the Study of War (ISW) report published on August 3.

According to ISW, a Russian military blogger acknowledged that Ukrainian forces had counterattacked near Rai-Oleksandrivka, east of Sloviansk.

ISW said Russian forces are increasingly relying on guided aerial bombs to shape the battlefield ahead of potential future assaults on the city.

Vadym Liakh, head of the Sloviansk City Military Administration, confirmed that Russian forces struck Sloviansk with a FAB-250 guided aerial bomb on the morning of August 2.

“Russian forces also continued offensive operations in the Kostiantynivka tactical direction on August 1 and 2 but did not achieve any confirmed advances,” ISW said.

One Russian military blogger claimed that Russian troops had moved south and southeast of Vasiutynske and north of Pershomarivka. ISW noted that there was no evidence confirming those claims.

Russian forces continue using guided bombs to destroy buildings and create openings for small sabotage and assault groups to infiltrate Kostiantynivka.

“An officer from a Ukrainian special operations unit reported that Russian troops continue infiltrating the city and often hide in basements or destroyed buildings while waiting for reinforcements,” ISW said.

Earlier, Ukrainian forces ambushed a Russian military convoy near Novohrodivka, damaging infantry fighting vehicles, cars, and transport trucks.
