700,000 Dead, 1.6 Million Total Losses: Zelenskyy Unveils Russia’s War Toll

Russia has suffered approximately 1.6 million military casualties since launching its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, including about 700,000 troops killed, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Fox News on July 31.

Zelenskyy also provided an updated estimate of Ukraine’s military losses, saying at least 50,000 Ukrainian service members had been killed and nearly 400,000 wounded.

The latest figure for Ukrainian troops killed is lower than the 55,000 Zelenskyy publicly cited in February. He did not explain the difference between the estimates.

A large number of Ukrainian service members also remain listed as missing, he added.

Despite the difficult situation along the front, Zelenskyy rejected the idea that Ukraine is losing the war or that Russia is winning.

He also said Russian forces currently lack the battlefield initiative, arguing that Moscow’s enormous personnel losses have not translated into decisive military success.

Previously, Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed a decree increasing the authorized strength of the Russian Armed Forces by 25,000 active military personnel to establish dedicated military construction units.

In addition, Zelenskyy stated that Russia is preparing to deploy an additional 30,000 North Korean troops and receive new ballistic missile launchers from Pyongyang.
