The unit said it had successfully intercepted the UAV and released footage showing the wreckage of the downed aircraft.

“This is a new Molniya that flew our way. It is one and a half times larger than the standard one. It has four engines,” a Ukrainian service member said while examining the remains of the drone.

According to the 8th Air Assault Corps, the Molniya-13 is designed for reconnaissance, monitoring, and search-and-rescue operations. The drone is a relatively recent Russian development, having been publicly presented for the first time in June 2026.

In general, the Molniya is a relatively simple Russian fixed-wing attack drone designed mainly to carry explosive payloads. It has an estimated operational range of 30 to 40 kilometers and can transport a warhead of up to seven kilograms. Adapted variants have also been used for reconnaissance missions and to adjust artillery fire.

Beyond strike and reconnaissance missions, Russian forces have also been experimenting with Molniya drones for logistics. Footage previously released by the Sunstrike unmanned systems unit of Ukraine’s 82nd Separate Air Assault Brigade showed the drones being tested to deliver weapons and other supplies to frontline positions.

The footage showed several configurations adapted to transport different types of cargo, including one drone carrying a rifle and another fitted with a package of supplies.
