Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), together with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, carried out overnight strikes against Russian military-industrial and oil infrastructure in the Moscow region, as well as military facilities at the Belbek airbase in temporarily occupied Crimea.

According to statements released by the SBU on May 17, the operation targeted facilities linked to Russia’s defense production and fuel logistics network. In the Moscow region, the reported targets included the Angstrem microelectronics plant, the Moscow Oil Refinery, and the Solnechnogorsk and Volodarskoye oil pumping stations.
The Angstrem facility is under US sanctions and is described by Ukrainian authorities as a supplier of semiconductors for Russia’s military-industrial sector.

The SBU also reported strikes on infrastructure and air defense systems at the Belbek military airbase in temporarily occupied Crimea overnight.
The reported targets at Belbek included a Pantsir-S2 air defense system, a radar hangar associated with an S-400 system, Orion and Forpost drone control systems, a ground-to-air data transmission point, an air traffic control tower, and an aircraft hangar.
According to SBU chief Yevhenii Khmara, the strikes were intended to reduce Russia’s military capabilities and logistics capacity.

“Such SBU special operations are critically important for weakening Russia’s military potential. Strikes against military-industrial enterprises, military infrastructure, and oil logistics reduce the enemy’s ability to continue the war against Ukraine,” Khmara said.
The operation followed one of the largest reported drone attacks on Russian territory since the start of the full-scale war. Earlier on May 17, Russian authorities and local Telegram channels reported explosions and fires across Moscow region and temporarily occupied Crimea.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that Russian air defenses intercepted more than 1,000 aerial targets over the past 24 hours, including drones, a Neptune missile, and what it described as a “Flamingo” cruise missile.
