Ukraine Destroys Rare Russian 2S44 Giatsint-K—Only Second Confirmed Loss of the War

Operators from Ukraine’s 151st Mechanized Brigade destroyed a rare Russian 2S44 Giatsint-K wheeled self-propelled artillery system in the Kupiansk direction, Militarnyi reported on August 3.

The vehicle represents only the second confirmed destruction of a Giatsint-K since Russia launched its full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine.

The relatively new 152mm artillery system is mounted on a four-axle BAZ-6010-027 8×8 wheeled chassis. Its design combines the artillery component of the Soviet-built 2A36 Giatsint-B towed gun with a mobile platform, following a concept similar to Russia’s 2S43 Malva self-propelled howitzer.

The Giatsint-K can fire standard high-explosive fragmentation shells to approximately 30.5 kilometers, or 19 miles. Rocket-assisted ammunition extends its range to about 33.1 kilometers, or 20.5 miles.

Its wheeled chassis gives the system greater road mobility than traditional tracked artillery, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, or roughly 50 mph.

That mobility is intended to let Russian crews fire and quickly relocate before Ukrainian forces can respond.

Previously, reports emerged that Russia was ramping up the production of its 152mm wheeled artillery system 2S44 “Hyacinth-K,” modeled after Ukraine’s “Bohdana” self-propelled artillery unit.

Russia plans to produce 36 units of the 2S44 in 2026, integrating it with advanced targeting systems like “Kropiva” to enhance firing accuracy.
