Russia is ramping up the production of its 152mm wheeled artillery system 2S44 “Hyacinth-K,” modeled after Ukraine’s “Bohdana” self-propelled artillery unit (SAU), Defense Express reported on January 22.

Russia plans to produce 36 units of the 2S44 in 2026, integrating it with advanced targeting systems like “Kropiva” to enhance firing accuracy.

The 2S44 “Hyacinth-K” is designed to be mounted on wheeled platforms and is an adaptation of the “Hyacinth-B” towed artillery system. Russia is upgrading the system’s software and algorithms for fire calculations, aiming to improve targeting precision, according to Defense Express.

Additionally, integration with decision-support systems such as “Kruzhok” and “Lys” will enable the use of guided artillery shells, including the “Krasnopol” precision-guided munition.

The artillery will be assembled between February and August 2026 at OVC facilities in the Russian city of Omsk, with the first batch of 12 units expected to undergo testing by the end of May 2026, Defense Express wrote.

Despite these advancements, Russia still faces challenges in producing the 2A36 barrels required for the 2S44, relying on components from stored “Hyacinth-B” systems.

Although Russia’s 2S44 production volumes remain low compared to Ukraine’s “Bohdana,” the integration of guided weapons and improved artillery targeting systems could pose a significant threat to Ukrainian defense positions, Defense Express stressed.

With a maximum firing range of 28.5 km to 42.5 km, the 2S44 offers substantial long-range artillery firepower.

Previously, it was reported that the Ukrainian 47th Artillery Brigade has received its first Bohdana-B towed 155mm howitzer, a domestically produced artillery system designed to boost battlefield firepower with a cost-effective and durable alternative to self-propelled variants.

Brigade press service released images of the new weapon in action. Artillery crews demonstrated its deployment and firing procedures, showcasing a gun developed from the barrel of Ukraine’s self-propelled Bohdana howitzer and the Soviet-era Giatsint-B towed chassis.
