Germany Finds Explosive Devices at Power Substations Amid Growing Sabotage Wave

German police discovered suspected explosive and incendiary devices near two electricity substations in Saxony as authorities investigate a series of recent attempts to disrupt the country’s energy infrastructure.

According to German outlet Bild on September 5, the devices were found near substations in the Görlitz and Bautzen districts, close to the Brandenburg state border and facilities operated by energy company LEAG. Four devices were reportedly discovered near the Graustein substation and seven near the Berwalde substation.
Saxony Interior Minister Armin Schuster confirmed on September 4 that authorities were dealing with “unknown explosive devices” near two substations. Police in Görlitz said officers worked through the night to secure evidence, while searches of nearby high-voltage infrastructure continued.

The discoveries follow several similar incidents at German energy facilities in recent days. On September 2, suspected devices were found near a substation in Brandenburg, while another apparent act of sabotage occurred near Cologne.
Investigators are examining whether the incidents are connected. According to Bild, police received a letter on September 3 in which the author claimed responsibility for the latest incident and other attempted attacks on energy infrastructure over the previous week.
German media identified the suspected author as a 49-year-old man from North Rhine-Westphalia.
During a search of his apartment in Gevelsberg, investigators reportedly found potassium nitrate and potassium perchlorate, substances that can be used in explosive mixtures. The suspect was not at the property, and police later located his vehicle in a forest. A search for him remains underway.
The author of previous letters had reportedly described the attacks as opposition to fossil-fuel energy. Several of the targeted substations are located in regions associated with lignite mining and electricity generation.
The cases come amid broader security concerns surrounding German critical infrastructure. German authorities have recorded more than 165 suspected sabotage incidents since the beginning of 2026, alongside nearly 750 cases involving suspicious drones over military sites and critical infrastructure, according to German media reports.
