Russian Ballistic Strike Shuts Down Ukraine’s Kamet Steel Plant, Killing Five Workers

A Russian ballistic missile strike on the Kamet Steel plant in Kamianske, Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, killed five people, wounded four others, and forced the major steelmaking facility to suspend production.

According to Metinvest, the plant’s parent company, on September 5, the attack occurred overnight and damaged Kamet Steel’s sinter and blast furnace operations, as well as energy and transport infrastructure across the industrial site.
Four Kamet Steel employees and one worker from a contractor were killed in the strike. Another four employees sustained injuries of varying severity and remain under medical supervision.
Only several minutes passed between the declaration of an air raid alert and the missile strike, Metinvest said, leaving some workers unable to reach shelters in time.
Oleksandr Myronenko, Metinvest’s chief operating officer, said there were no military facilities, equipment, or military production at the plant.
“Only civilians worked here, smelting iron and steel exclusively for civilian purposes,” Myronenko said.
Emergency and recovery operations are underway at the site. Specialists will be able to conduct a full assessment of the damaged equipment and infrastructure after debris removal is completed, according to the company.
Metinvest has not provided a timeline for restarting production. Kamet Steel is one of Ukraine’s major metallurgical facilities and produces pig iron, steel, and rolled products. The plant is part of Metinvest, one of the country’s largest industrial groups.
The September 5 attack marks the second time in recent weeks that a major Metinvest steel facility has halted operations following a Russian ballistic missile strike.
In August, Zaporizhstal suspended operations after a ballistic attack struck the facility shortly after an air raid alert was issued. Seven plant employees were killed and another 21 were injured in that attack.
Kamianske declared September 5 a day of mourning for those killed in the latest strike, while flags were lowered at Metinvest facilities.
The strike on Kamet Steel came during a broader Russian overnight attack on Ukraine on September 5. Russia also targeted Kyiv and Boryspil airports with Shahed-type drones, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy linked to preparations for a possible US delegation arriving in Ukraine by air.
