The Ukrainian military has received its first Bohdana-B towed 155mm howitzer, a domestically produced artillery system designed to boost battlefield firepower with a cost-effective and durable alternative to self-propelled variants, according to the 47th Artillery Brigade on March 24.
Brigade press service released images of the new weapon in action. Artillery crews demonstrated its deployment and firing procedures, showcasing a gun developed from the barrel of Ukraine’s self-propelled Bohdana howitzer and the Soviet-era Giatsint-B towed chassis.
The Bohdana-B retains its 52-caliber long barrel, which provides extended range and accuracy. Due to its weight—likely over 10 tons—the system is transported using a high-mobility Daewoo Novus truck.
Unlike the self-propelled Bohdana, which costs around $2.5 million per unit, the Bohdana-B is estimated at $1.5 million, Ukrainian military outlet Militarny stated, making it a more affordable way to equip artillery units with long-range, high-quality firepower.

Military analysts highlight several advantages of towed systems, including greater survivability, lower maintenance requirements, and easier mass production.
The shift toward towed artillery also addresses production bottlenecks.
Ukrainian defense officials noted that the supply of self-propelled howitzer chassis from foreign manufacturers lags behind the production of artillery components, limiting deployment speed.
The Bohdana-B offers a practical workaround, enabling Ukraine to rapidly arm its forces without reliance on imported chassis.
Earlier, Igor Fedirko, executive director of Ukraine’s Arms Industry Council, stated that local manufacturers could fulfill contracts for up to 115 Bohdana systems within 2–3 months, potentially producing over 40 units per month.
If implemented, Ukraine could simultaneously scale up both self-propelled and towed versions, significantly enhancing artillery capabilities on the battlefield.
