Ukraine Hits Russian MiG-29 and the Pantsir-S1 Guarding Its Airfield, Video

Ukraine’s 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade “Black Forest” struck a Russian MiG-29 fighter jet and a Pantsir-S1 air defense system during an operation at Khalino airfield in Russia’s Kursk region, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on July 21.

The strike placed two high-value Russian assets at the same military aviation facility under attack: a combat aircraft and a short-range air defense system designed to protect airfields and other strategic sites from missiles, aircraft, and drones.

The General Staff did not immediately provide further details on the extent of the damage.

The MiG-29, known by the NATO reporting name Fulcrum, is a twin-engine supersonic fighter developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s to counter aircraft such as the US F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon.

It entered service in 1983 and was primarily designed for air-to-air combat, although later versions gained the ability to strike ground targets. The fighter can carry air-to-air missiles, bombs, and rockets and is armed with a 30mm cannon.

The Pantsir-S1 combines surface-to-air missiles with twin 30mm autocannons. Russian forces use the system to defend military facilities and other high-value targets against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.

Previously, a three-week Ukrainian operation concluded with two precision drone hits destroying a Russian Su-24M at Saky airfield just as the bomber was preparing to strike Ukraine.
