According to a statement published by Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Maj. Robert “Madyar” Brovdi on July 15, operators from the 427th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade “RAROG” struck the helicopter at around 10:00 a.m. near the village of Vyazovoye in Russia’s Belgorod region.

Brovdi shared combat footage of the engagement on his official Telegram channel, writing: “Mi-28 'Night Hunter' into the ground. SBS Birds, 427th Brigade 'RAROG.' 10:00, Belgorod region, Vyazovoye area.” He also referred readers to the Unmanned Systems Forces' online strike tracker.

The commander’s statement did not specify which type of drone was used or provide additional details about the helicopter’s crew or the extent of the damage. Russia’s Defense Ministry had not commented on the reported strike at the time of publication.

The Mi-28 “Night Hunter” is Russia’s dedicated attack helicopter designed to engage armored vehicles, ground targets, and low-flying aircraft. The platform is equipped with a 30 mm automatic cannon, guided anti-tank missiles, and unguided rockets, and has been widely used by Russian forces during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The reported shootdown comes months after Russian defense officials acknowledged that FPV drones had emerged as a serious threat to military helicopters.

In October 2025, Russian Helicopters confirmed it was developing new protection systems after several rotorcraft were damaged or destroyed by Ukrainian FPV drones, highlighting the growing vulnerability of low-flying aircraft to inexpensive unmanned systems.
