Ukraine Hopes US Will Back FREYJA as Kyiv Works With Europe on Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense

Ukraine hopes for US support in implementing its FREYJA anti-ballistic missile program, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told journalists, according to UNITED24 Media on September 8.

“We are preparing our own FREYJA program. We very much hope that the Americans will support this program as well. But, nevertheless, with the Europeans we will definitely achieve the desired result,” Zelenskyy said.

Until the program delivers the required capabilities, however, Ukraine will continue to need ballistic missile packages from the United States, the president said.

“I expect to meet with President Trump in the 20s of this month, to raise this issue, and, God willing, there will be a result,” Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy also said diplomatic efforts were progressing toward a trilateral format, though he did not provide further details.

“We are also moving, in my opinion, toward a trilateral format,” he said.

The comments follow Zelenskyy’s statement that the United States recognizes Ukraine’s improved position on the battlefield and its stronger negotiating leverage. Speaking about recent diplomatic efforts involving US representatives Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and others, the Ukrainian president said that assessment is shared by American military officials and analysts.
