Ukraine’s domestically developed ballistic missile successfully struck its intended target during testing, Mykhailo Fedorov said in an interview with Ukrainian activist and former Defense Ministry adviser Serhii Sternenko published on August 6.

“We tested the ballistic missile successfully and hit the target without deviating from course,” Fedorov said.

He stressed that the testing program is not yet complete.

The weapon may be the 1KR1 Sapsan, also known as Hrim-2, Ukraine’s domestically developed operational-tactical ballistic missile system, which reportedly entered serial production in 2025.

Development of the Sapsan dates back to 2007, when Ukraine’s Pivdenne Design Bureau received the initial technical requirements and $12 million in early funding for the program.

By 2018, Ukraine had tested a launcher mock-up and a demonstrator for a cluster warhead and had assembled an engineering prototype of the missile.

As of early 2022, two missile configurations were under development. A 900mm version intended for Ukraine was designed for a range of up to 500 kilometers, or about 310 miles, while a smaller 600mm export version was planned with a range of roughly 280 kilometers, or 174 miles.

Both versions were expected to carry warheads weighing approximately 500 kilograms, or about 1,100 pounds.

Earlier, reports emerged that Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has launched serial production and deployment of the 1KR1 Sapsan operational-tactical missile system after several years of development.
