Ukraine Loses MiG-29 During Missile Launch Over Odesa as Pilot Ejects, Video

Ukraine's Air Force lost a MiG-29 fighter jet on the evening of August 10, after a malfunction during a missile launch set the aircraft ablaze over the Odesa region.

The Air Force Command reported the loss in a statement posted to its official Telegram channel. The pilot had been carrying out a combat mission to destroy enemy aerial targets over the region.

Citing preliminary data, the Air Force stated that "an abnormal situation occurred during the missile launch, after which the aircraft caught fire, and the pilot lost control." The pilot attempted to save the aircraft, according to the statement.

He ejected successfully and was evacuated to a medical facility. The causes of the incident are being established.

Footage posted online by Clash Report appeared to show a Ukrainian MiG-29 crashing in the Odesa region.

The MiG-29 is a Soviet-designed fourth-generation frontline fighter developed in the 1970s. That still forms the backbone of Ukraine's fighter fleet despite significant wear. Built to intercept aerial targets and fight at close range, the single-seat jet reaches Mach 2.3, with a service ceiling of 18,000 meters and a combat radius of about 700 kilometers

It carries a 30mm GSh-301 cannon and up to seven hardpoints for R-27 medium-range and R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles. Ukraine does not disclose the current number of operational MiG-29s, and no authoritative public estimate provides an exact fleet figure as of August 10. The International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance 2026, released in February, provides updated assessments of military equipment inventories worldwide, including Ukraine, but its detailed country inventory is not publicly accessible.

The loss adds to a run of incidents that Ukraine has tied to the wear of its Soviet-era airframes. On June 27, 2026, the Air Force lost another MiG-29 in the Poltava region, part of the same pattern of technical failures during recent combat operations.
