Ukraine Repatriates 522 Fallen Soldiers in Latest Exchange With Russia

Ukraine and Russia have completed another transfer of deceased military personnel, resulting in the return of 522 bodies to Ukraine and 33 bodies to Russia.
The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War announced on June 18, that the Russian side claims these 522 bodies belong to citizens of Ukraine, specifically service members, according to Deutsche Welle.

Following the transfer, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and expert institutions will conduct the necessary forensic examinations to identify the remains.
The repatriation operation involved a coordinated effort among several Ukrainian government structures.
These included the Joint Center under the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also provided assistance during the process.
Representatives from the Russian side confirmed receiving the remains of 33 service members from Ukraine. This transfer follows a previous repatriation event on May 16, during which Ukraine received the bodies of 528 individuals and Russia received the remains of 41 individuals.
Earlier, Ukraine completed the first phase of a major “1,000-for-1,000” prisoner exchange with Russia, securing the return of 205 Ukrainian service members from captivity on May 15, according to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Most of the released soldiers had reportedly spent nearly four years in captivity, including many captured during the defense of Mariupol.
